July 2022

High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in July 2022 under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council called for the Summit to “Mark the beginning of a new phase of accelerated progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals .”

"Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals: Towards a Rescue Plan for People and Planet"

In this report the Secretary-General urged world leaders to come together at the SDG Summit to deliver a Rescue Plan for People and Planet centred around three major breakthroughs: 1) Equipping governance and institutions for sustainable and inclusive transformation. 2) Prioritizing policies and investments that have multiplier effects across the goals. 3) Securing a surge in SDG financing and an enabling global environment for developing countries.

We believe it is critical that part of this "Rescue Plan for People and Planet" include a virtues-based approach to "mark the beginning of a new phase of accelerated progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals."

At this pivotal midpoint of our SDG journey, a strategic shift is paramount. Beyond actions, we need transformation. By infusing virtues into our approach, we catalyze innovation and amplify results. Let's harness this tactical transformation to drive impactful change towards our shared goals.

Empower Change Through Shared Virtues

Welcome to the campaign dedicated to amplifying the influence of universal values and virtues within the upcoming 2023 SDG Summit. Our mission is clear: we believe that by integrating a set of shared virtues into the political decree, we can inspire powerful, positive change that resonates across the globe.

The 2023 SDG Summit stands as a beacon of opportunity for Heads of State and Government to assess our progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At this pivotal moment, we aim to introduce a virtues-based approach that transcends boundaries, cultures, and traditions, echoing the aspirations of diverse societies worldwide.

In our collective journey, we acknowledge the profound impact of virtues such as compassion, courage, cooperation, and empathy. These principles, along with a rich tapestry of 100 universally cherished virtues, encapsulate the language of unity and purpose that unites us in our pursuit of a sustainable future.

In our collective pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a harmonious future for all, we recognize the profound impact that universal values and virtues can have in guiding our path forward. As Heads of State and Government convened at the 2023 SDG Summit, we commit to integrating a set of shared virtues into our joint efforts to transform our world.

We acknowledge that a virtues-based approach, centered on principles such as compassion, courage, cooperation, responsibility, empathy, and a diverse array of 100 universally cherished virtues, is essential to realizing the vision of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By embodying these universal virtues in our governance, policies, and actions, we align ourselves with the highest aspirations of humanity and address the most pressing challenges we face.

Equipping Governance and Institutions:

We understand that virtues such as fairness, justice, and dignity are integral to building effective and accountable governance structures. By fostering an environment where these virtues thrive, we ensure that our institutions serve all members of society, leaving no one behind on the path to progress.

Prioritizing Policies and Investments:

We recognize the transformative power of virtues in shaping policies and investments that create a chain reaction of positive impact across multiple SDGs. By prioritizing actions that uphold virtues, we harness the potential to not only achieve individual goals but also to catalyze broader sustainable development, touching lives in ways we never thought possible.

Securing SDG Financing and Enabling Global Environment:

We embrace virtues like unity, cooperation, and responsibility as cornerstones of global solidarity. By embodying these values, we create an enabling environment for securing SDG financing and fostering international partnerships. We stand united in our commitment to supporting one another on this shared journey, leaving no nation or community behind.

As we move forward, we pledge to champion these universally shared virtues, encompassing wisdom from diverse cultures and traditions, in our policy decisions, resource allocations, and collaborations. We recognize that our collective actions can bring about transformative change that transcends boundaries and empowers future generations. By infusing this array of shared virtues into the core of our endeavors, we reaffirm our commitment to leaving a legacy of sustainability, equity, and prosperity for all.

Let us embark on this journey together, as stewards of a better future, and let these shared virtues guide us toward a world that we can proudly pass on to the generations that follow.
